Hi, I'm Dr. Alex!

You deserve support and I am glad you have found your way here!

For many of us, parenthood represents a profound change not only in our daily life (hello sleepless nights, diaper changes and tantrums), but also in the ways that we see the world and understand ourselves. Perhaps not unexpectedly, the magnitude of these changes can bring up anxieties and insecurities, resurfacing of past traumas and old wounds, create confusion about the ways in which we want to show up as parents and stress our relationship with our partner. Additionally, our journey into parenthood can involve its own traumas (hello difficult birth or unexpected aspects of parenthood)! In these moments, I am honored to meet parents with curiosity, connection and support.

In my virtual office, you can expect a therapeutic relationship that creates a gentle, warm, and authentic place from which we can be curious about the different parts of ourselves, the stories we tell within our family systems and how our past interweaves with our present experiences to support or inhibit our own sense of wellness.

I often find that these conversations center around attachment, reparenting, breaking old patterns and cycles, and healing from trauma and adversity. Additionally, counseling sessions often explore concrete ideas and strategies to address anxiety, depression, difficulty adjusting, trauma and parenting in the present moment.

A deeper dive into my personal and professional journey:

My interest in the healing power of counseling and relationships began as an undergraduate student intern in the Gottman Relationship Institute in Seattle, Washington and quickly led to the pursuit of a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. I worked as a counselor for five years before again returning to academia with the pursuit of my doctorate.

My doctoral dissertation work focused on traumatic birth experiences, perinatal mood disorders, infant-parent communication, attachment and the impact of adverse childhood experiences during the postpartum period. During this time, I also enjoyed teaching and supervising counselors-in-training during their master’s course work, particularly as it relates to professional identity, clinical skills and education in growth and human development. I have also spent time consulting with preschools regarding fostering positive socioemotional development within the classroom.

Additionally, I have specialty training in supporting those who have experienced trauma both within their childhood and adult years. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and have additional background in working with those whose birth experiences have been difficult or traumatic.

I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor offering teletherapy in the state of California (#9425) and Nevada (CP0098). I work with individuals and families during the peripartum years and have experience in perinatal mood disorders, anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences, life adjustment and parenting.

When I’m not in the therapy office, I am a wife and a mother of two! My clinical and academic work have taught me a great deal, but my two little ones have certainly been my greatest teachers yet.
